25. From Percentages to Profits: Learning How Discounts Work

WALT – Learn about percentages and discounts and show your thinking and working out.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Is it really a bargain ? Sometimes shops can trick us into thinking that items are a bargain  when they may not be. For example, do they think we might not buy a $9.99 book if the sticker said $10? There hardly seems to be a day  that goes by without shops offering items at discount prices. The discounts are often shown as a percentage.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Zdravstvuyte everyone,

As you can see from the first paragraphs of this blog that I’m going to explain a  bit about percentages and discounts. First things first percentages are included in discounts which show how much percentage the item or thing goes  for  then the original price.

What are  discounts and percentages ?

Discounts are a reduction of the original price of the product or item.

Percentages in supermarket meaning means that if it was up to 20% off meaning that 20% off the original price is the new price.

What is a discount in supermarkets ?

If you have ever gone to a supermarket you see price tags with a number and a percentage like this 50%. This means that the price has been lowered down and that if you buy the item then you could save a lot of money or some money. Some people fall into this trap it could either be a good bargain or a bad bargain.

What we learnt around percentages and discounts !!

We had to work from our year 8 textbooks and they  gave us some easy questions to do so we are able to get the hang of it. Some eof the questions we got asked were like 👇

If a book advertised at $9.99 and the discount is 50% or 10%,  we don’t need a calculator to work out the new price. Work out the new price of the book with  each of the discounts below. Round the new price to a sensible amount. Then in our math books we would round the new prices to the amount we think would be the sensible amount.

They would provide the percentages and we would have to work out the answer to the percentages and create the new price. Doing this activity was  hard but let me understand the working of discounts and percentages.

25. The Power of Linear Equations in Problem Solving

Ni Hao Everyone,

For math this week we are learning about Linear equations. Well Linear equations come under the category Algebra if you don’t like Algebra well that’s okay because we have some tips and tricks for you.

What are Linear equations ?

Well Linear equations are when you have a number and a letter you e.g. x + 4 = 9 looking at this equation you would think this is 5 and that is correct but the actual answer is x = 5 because you are trying to figure out the value of the letter. This equation is just a simple equation that you could answer. Linear equations could also look like this e.g. 5x = 35 this equation includes having to use your times table. The answer would be x = 7 because 7 x 5 = 35.

Types of Linear equations

There are many types of Linear equations that we are able to answer. Here are some examples.

x + 9 = 21

x – 6 = 14

x/2 = 14

4z = 96

0.5 = 4

2b + 4 = 25

2 ( 3 + b ) = 24

There are many ways to solve all of these questions. They gradually grow harder and harder but there is always a solution to a problem. If I answer all of these then it’s like you would be reading an article about Linear Equations. I will add a picture of my book down there so you can see how I figured it out.

Sorry for the bad quality  but if you are able to see the equations then that would be good.

Also under the topic types of linear equations graphs are included I will also add a photo of a graph that we are able to use under the topic Linear equations.

Thank you for reading my blog and if you forgot here is your reminder to spread the holy word of God.

25. Understanding Angles: The Building Blocks of Geometry

WALT : Understand angles and be able to name the various angles.

Assalamualaikum Everyone,

Last week for math we were learning about angles and we will be continuing learning about angles.

What are angles? An angle is the space between two straight lines that meet at a point. That point is called the vertex. You can think of an angle like the corner of a book or the hands of a clock.

We measure angles in degrees (°). Here are some common types of angles:

  • Acute angle: Smaller than 90°.
  • Right angle: Exactly 90°.
  • Obtuse angle: Bigger than 90° but less than 180°.
  • Straight angle: Exactly 180°.

We also learnt about two other angles which were called complementary and supplementary.

  • Complementary angle:  angles or any angles that add up to 90 degrees.
  • Supplementary angle: can be only added up to 180 degrees.

We also learnt about the lines in the angles for example in the middle of the angles like this.

As you can see in the middle it’s called a vertex and the lines are called rays or in our textbook it explains the names as arms. We also learnt about letters in angles here is a video that explains what I’m talking about.

Angle Link ( Click to open the video )

In the beginning it was easy but then when we got to independent and extended practice it got harder and we needed to make sure it was correct but also clear to read or else it could of been marked wrong. And that was all we did for math this week and last week.

I hope my blog was fun to read and make sure to add some suggestions in your comments to let me make a better blog but always remember to spread the gospel.

“Algebraic Expressions: Your Secret Weapon to Mastering Math!”

Ni Hao Everybody,

Our focus in math this week was around algebraic expressions. We learnt about what the different letters and numbers meant and represented. We learnt about pronumerals / Variables this means the little letter beside the number can be changed. We also learnt about Constant numbers which are the number that cannot be changed. And the last was called formula this means a written rule showing a relationship between numbers and letters. Here is an example of the different numbers and letters that we used.

In this term they have used Coefficient as the meaning formula. They just have just used a  different type of word but the same meaning ( Which is called a synonym) .  We had different types of equations that included algebraic expressions. We had to use multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. We also used brackets in some different equations. We worked in a text book this is what it looked like.

Here are some examples of the types of questions we were asked.

These are some similar questions we needed to answer.

Thank you for  reading my blog I hope you have an amazing rest of your day / week and remember to spread the gospel.

Fractions, Decimals & Percentages

Assalamualaikum Everyone,

This week for maths we have been learning about percentage fractions and decimals. We are continuing from last week’s work because we still need to learn some more about fractions decimals and percentages. We needed to convert decimals into fractions or fractions into decimals or fractions into decimals or fractions into percentages. It was a bit hard when you first try to understand it but when you constantly keep on doing it you are able to get the hang of it and then it becomes a piece of pie. And the name of changing percentages into fractions or the other different ways we call it convert or converting. I have created a DLO for you guys to take a look at what we have done and how we did it.

Math DLO

As you are able to see those were our main focus this week it was hard but overtime it started to warm up and it felt good to know that we are able to convert these easily.

Thank you for reading my blog I hope you have a good rest of your day / week and remember to spread the gospel ✝.

25. Weekly Learning Recap

WALT: Complete all our work and blog it on one blog.

Ni Hao Everyone,

This week for reading we have been learning about the Maori Battalion. Firstly we needed to make sure that we read the article so that we know what information we needed to add to our DLO ( Digital Learning Object ). Some facts that I learnt are that the Maori Battalion started in 1940 – 1945. I also have some more facts and I will add my DLO below this.

Maori Battalion

For math we have been learning about fractions, decimals and percentages. Firstly we needed to know what this is and how we can use this in our math. We were assigned to do our math from the math books. They have different units and topics.  We need to work on three pages which are around percentages decimals and fractions. We looked more into fractions. We learn this stuff because we have tests and our math is based on the questions on the test. And that was all that we did for math.

For writing we worked on our ice story. We needed to use our five senses to  explain how the ice felt in our hands. We needed to do descriptive writing about the ice. I will add a link down here for you to read about my story and how I felt about the ice.

25. Learning Recap

Talofa Koutou Katoa,

WALT : Be confident of public speaking 🗣.

For the first week back from break our teacher had said to us that we are going to be reflecting on our holidays and Ko Wai Au ( Who Am I ). She expected us to have a slideshow ready by the end of the week on FRIDAY!! Most of us said it was a short time and we probably couldn’t do it. And she had assigned us 3 tasks or assignments and we only had one week to finish all of the work ( which I thought was impossible) .

For the first assignment we needed to have a slideshow as explained. It was a reflection on what we did over the holidays. And she said that we didn’t need to add words and just pictures. There was a limit of 6 slides and we were able to create the pictures how we wanted it to be. But we had to put it in order basically we needed to show what highlights out of the 2 weeks.

For our Ko Wai Au we needed to do a mini version of our large Ko Wai Au. We were able to put what we liked onto our poster. I went for a blue theme background with some flowers. I also put some of my favourite things like food, sport, etc. And I created mine on Canva a site where I added my information and then I added some pictures to make it look creative. I made sure that I had little paragraphs for my writing so that I can explain what this writing is about. And that is what we did for our Ko Wai Au.

Thank you for reading my blog I hope you have a good rest of your day and remember to spread the gospel 🔥.

Market Day Game Math T4 .24

Kumusta Everyone,

This week for math we have been learning about financial literacy and we had to learn about percentages and then we had to play this market game thing and it was hard to learn a first but then when I got the hang of it, it was easy to do because I understand it. I will put a photo down to show you what it looked like and then I will explain the things on it.

It is called market game. So firstly you need at least two people and then you need two dice one that is blank so you can write the letters that are provided on the sheet you also need to have a normal dice and then you have to roll it and then when it is your turn you roll it and if you land on the blue one then you have to roll the dice with the letters on and then sell that thing. And here is some of the sheets I will put it down here for you to see.

Thank you for reading my blog I hope you have a good rest of your day and remember to spread the gospel.

Compound Interest Math T4 .24

Namaste  Everyone,

For math this week we have been learning about compound interest and savers and spenders also percentages. So we discussed the wants and the needs and we have to explain which we think we are out of the spenders and savers. I think I am a spender because when my parents give me money I spend it on chocolate and candy and spend it all in one second. So firstly we had to do some budgeting and economics which I have already blogged about. And then we had to work in a book that used Compound Interest and something that used are you a spender or saver. So to work out compound interest is easy so you have a bit of money in the first year and then say you have 7% interest you have to take how much money you have and then times x it by the percent so if I had 100 then I had to x times them by he 7% and then you do not press the equals button because it will give you a different number. So I will put my DLO of spender and savers and compound interest down here for you to see. For the interest the percentage was 7 %. I will also put a photo of the percentages that are on  the ASB website.

Thank you for reading my blog I hope you have a good rest of your day and remember to spread the gospel.

Budgeting / Economics T4 .24

Malo E Lelei

Today we had to classify expenses into wants or needs. So I will put it down here for you to see. So as you can see this is what we did we did this on a doc.

DOC with work

This is the work that we did it was something that we had to work on for at least two days. Then we had to do some other different work in the same math book because we were still looking at money. SO we had to budget the persons money she wanted to donate to charity but she only wanted to donate $400 and she had $1000 but remember she only wants to donate $400 so we had to do some research to see what charity we would donate to if we had that $400. But that was what we did for math these past few weeks I hope you liked it.

Thank you for reading my blog I hope you have a good rest of your day.
